2023 Hisui/Paldea Event Prompt #1: It's a dark stormy night, wind lashing tree branches into buildings and sending leaves flying to the ground. Rain coming in sideways and so hard it feels like someone is throwing small pebbles around. What is the pokemon doing? Trying to find shelter? Using the storm to cause all sorts of mischief and mayhem? Helping another in need?
A young pawmi named Tolph and his family and friends were out for winter forage. It was mainly grassland out here, with rolling hills and intermittent trees as far as the eye could see-- from one hilltop to the next. The area was quite hilly. Plenty of insects, grains an other grasses for them to find. It took little time to fill one's cheeks or a bag, which was especially helpful when that the weather suddenly began to change.
"We should head home," one of the others said.
Tolph heard thunder and saw faint flashing light. The tiny pawmi, with his face in the grass, gazed upward, first at his cousin then at the sky. A flash of lightning carried with it an almost simultaneous roll of thunder. Dark and depthless, a waning blue sky was being smothered by rain-heavy clouds. A raindrop smacked him in the forehead. He nodded. "I agree."
Hurriedly, the scattering of pokémon gathered the food they had found and formed a group. Once everyone was present, they set out together, following a well-trodden path to the river.
"We're almost there." He knew this trail, as did most of the others. He glanced up again to see the blackened canopy of sparse trees giving way to the river that cut through the area.
The river rushed by, already swelling with rainwater and claiming the grass that clung to its banks. The ford for which Tolph's family was named was simply no longer there. To try to cross would be rash and potentially fatal. But home was on the far shore. Where else could he go?
He turned around, seeking his uncle's eyes. This pawmot was the leader of their group for the day. "What do we do?"
He took a moment to think. "Well, I think we should go back. Stick to the high ground and then return once the river waters have gone back down. Our normal path through the water should be back in a few days."
"A few days," seemed like a long time to the youth. They wanted to go home sooner, but entertained themselves together romping in the grass. They sought cover in the rain, but came out again when dry.
Tolph was bored, and so were a few of his friends. "Let's play a game," one of them proposed slyly. "The loser has to hang over the river and tell us when it's safe to cross." The game was: who could jump the highest. The measurements were determined by the number of leaves slashed with their claws, and on which branch those leaves came from.
Tolph readied himself with stretch exercises. He was just a pawmi but he came from a long line of fighters. They weren't superhuman but he could jump a respectable height, and not just for his size. He waited until it was his turn to jump. He felt the power build in his legs until pop! Up into the air he jumped. When the final tallies were made, Tolph was dead last. He sighed. He always came in last.
So he headed off down the trail to the river, careful not to alert his uncle of his plan. Once he was in the woods he trotted along the path until he reached the river. It was even wider than before. It was a soupy mass all the way up to the last few inches of the bank. Would it flood? Would his family be in danger out there in the fields? How could he possibly think of how dangerous what he was about to do was?
Tolph climbed a nearby tree whose branches stretched out over the river. It was a diseased old tree that was barely hanging on with its roots. What else could it do? Many years it had remained steadfast but weak. Well today it was about to get a nice long break. Pun intended.
The branches were brittle, even Tolph could feel it in his hands and feet. This tree was not strong. He was out over the river. If he could just get back a few feet, he would be safe. But a big gust of wind buffeted the leaves, branches, and the little pawmi.
It was at that moment that his friends came looking for Tolph, about to call him back down. They didn't really want him in danger. They were just emerging with chuckles when the wind hit them. "Hey Tolphy! Come back down, it's too--"
SNAP!
The tree's entire top half popped off the trunk and landed in the raging river. Tolph let out a shriek of terror.
"Tolph! No!"
The pawmi struggled to get his bearings. Every time he grabbed a branch it snapped off. This continued repeatedly and he fell further down to the water. His labor in vain and he realized it when he fell into the water. He grabbed at leaves, branches, anything, but the river sucked him away.
He disappeared from their vision briefly and then he bobbed up again, the swirling waters treating him like a piece of cork.
"Tolph! Try to grab onto something! We'll try to help!"
He was cold, waterlogged, and had a deep, dark dread oozing around in his gut. What if this was all for nothing? He didn't want to die! He watched distantly while everyone following him as best they could, carrying branches in their mouths for him to grab onto. He realized he could no longer hear them, his ears were clogged. He dunked under and choked river water from his lungs. His family was growing more distant. Why was this happening! The harder he swam did not seem to matter. The river overpowered him effortlessly.
"No! Please don't go. I'm sorry! I'm sorry…"
Time ceased to exist. Was it hours or moments later when he found himself ashore? There were pebbles and sand beneath his boneless body. He felt like he must be a jellyfish out of water for all the strength he had in him. The river lapped at his ankles, as if it were a puppy wanting to play fetch a little longer. No, no more play today...
"Ew, don't touch it. It's dead."
He felt a jab into his ribs and water squirted out his nose. He felt the same force push water from his mouth. He started coughing.
"EW! It's alive!"
"Well, gross or not, it's mine!"
Tolph felt his body jostled and slowly dried with a towel. He felt the sensation of being moved. His eyes rolled halfway open and he realized he was being carried by a small human. He had no energy to argue in any way, and quickly fell asleep.
He did not wake when he was handed over to a nice lady with red hair in a pink nurse's uniform, nor when he was handed back to his new "master." It would be a little while yet before he would be okay to do much of anything. "That's okay. I'll take good care of him."

SOLO RP "Saved a Pawmi" Starring: - Botolphston the Pawmi 'mon - Adal the Gastly-Ivysaur child
Feet ground the detritus beneath their boot heels. Through the underbrush, the sound of rushing water gradually filled the child’s sensitive ears as they followed a well-worn trail. Two sets of ears twitched, the child’s, and that of another. Catching a glimpse of that reflex as the child broke through the line of trees, it was the only thing that proved the mucky, orange body was even alive. No other movement occurred. The child nearly tripped making their way over to the waterlogged pawmi.
The child-- a boy, crouched down and poked the pokemon with a thin, rubbery stick. Touch flitted gently across Botolphston’s fur. It tickled. Cheek, eye, and ears all twitched and the pawmi realized he was alive and awake.
He got up on his elbows and slowly looked up at the child. Suddenly, he choked. An instant later, wet, mucous-ladden water cleared the last of the river water from his lungs. A cough fit ensued and he felt with red-lightning pain how angry his lungs were to be both alive and wet. He was unable to utter a single sound by the time he was done. Thanks would be nice, he thought, but surely the kid already knew. Maybe not.
The boy got to his feet. “Wait for me. I will build us a fire. I need to make a camp anyway.”
As the child rose and turned around, it was then that the pawmi realized that the child’s backpack sat atop the large, opening flower characteristic of an ivysaur. The dark, gaseous halo about the child’s head and purple face shifted to follow him as he stepped away to make a camp.
Botolphston’s eyes must be playing tricks on him. Perhaps the backpack was really shaped like a flower and he had been mistaken. The child’s skin, what explained that? Or the halo? Tiredly, the pawmi sighed and lay his head back down on the moist ground.
Later on, the pawmi felt warmth encircle him and he opened his eyes, realizing he had fallen asleep. The light had changed. It was murky except for a warm, orange glow. A campfire. He looked around him. He had never been so high except in a tree. He glanced up and realized the child had picked him up. But before he could react-- had he the energy to do so-- the child set him down and the warmth on one side flared to life, while the side pointing away from the fire grew cool. Surprised to find himself missing the child’s arms, he was happy to see the child sit down on a rock and warm their hands.
Botolphston rose to his elbows and watched the fire for a while. Every now and again, he glanced up at the child. Feeling eyes upon them, the child looked up too and their eyes met. The smile was nice. Everything compared to that river was warm and nice, he realized, and he barked out a laugh.
At first the child looked up in alarm, thinking the laughter was another cough fit. But it wasn’t. It was just so nice to be in the presence of a new friend after such a long ordeal. The child laughed too. Maybe they really could be that. Friends. Whether friends for a night or friends for longer, the morning light would tell that story when it came...
