'「Wildfire」, ☼ Under a guiding light As the sun brushed lightly just above the horizon's reach, its rays were already burning a darkened orange, laden with the fatigue of the day but the stubbornness of a child not wanting to acknowledge the concept of 'bedtime.' The scenery blazed with the intensity of this last hurrah, and as time would soon prove, lull to the cottony pinks and reds before succumbing to its losing battle with the moon's evening. For such an unremarkable revolt, it sure seemed to be the most appealing spectacle to the young arcanine, the soft texture of the grass underneath his paws soon expected to light up like a sea of flames in the wake of the setting sun.
For a split-second, the puff of his curled tail straightened with a flick, the smallest of gestures to indicate his contentment before outward expressions nullified to a more neutral standing. The wind kicked up across the prairie, fingers of the breeze racing through grass and fur alike. It had only been recently that he was able to feel nature all around him like this again. How long had he been stored behind lock and key? The daily routine, being poked and prodded, strapped down and muzzled... he never wanted to see another needle again.
The shudder that ran, course, along his spine at the memory was concealed by the remnants of the wind's most recent exhaled breath. It had a calming effect, not unlike the company of one trusted; the security in knowing that you were the only one around, and didn't have to concern yourself with appearances, or being blindsided by fear. There was nothing to fear out here, after all: Revelin could see anything coming a mile away, in any direction.
Another strong gust kicked up around him. Nerves settling in the present now, they tingled to life with an adrenaline kick, born from exhilaration instead of nagging apprehension. Shaking out his fur, much like wringing out the last of the rainwater clinging to his coat, he loosened the restraints of a past he'd much rather leave where it was last experience in favor of the moment. Digging his toes into the soft earth, Revelin tore off across the grassland, pressing up against the feelings of freedom as hard as he could muster. This way, all he could hear was the whipping of wind past his ears, all he could feel was nature beneath his feet and the burning of his muscles as they carried him across an expanse he once thought was nothing but a mere daydream.
Moments seemed to stretch on as he raced the sun, losing himself in the present. Time had no meaning, distance didn't register so long as he could still find footing beneath him, and it wasn't until the fatigue started catching up with him that all the effects he had managed to outpace eventually caught up with him. The far side of the sky was already dyed a thick, dark purple, sequestering the sun underneath its blanket of stars for the night. Revelin's limbs ached and his breathing was coming in deep pants, but he was content. Dea's sanctuary was within sights, and with the darkening of the sky fast upon them, there was little happening outside. The serenity was subduing, as was the sense of security the scene provided. Nobody shady was patrolling outside, under the cover of dark, and nothing else seemed particularly out-of-place--
Revelin stood bolt upright as something glitzed across the sky. It looked like a shooting star, but there were more than a few inconsistencies in such a theory. His ears standing erect and his nose grabbing at the scents on the breeze, he tried to calculate whether whatever-it-was was still moving or not. It had zipped by much too close to have been any star he had ever seen. Not only that, but the sky was still stained too orange for the stars to be visible, at least on this half of the gradient.
The large arcanine lowered his head closer to the ground, but he wasn't able to pick up a scent any easier. He saw where it had seemed to come to a halt, faintly blinking like a beacon in the grass. Although his strides were careful, he picked up the pace to more of a trot, bracing himself for the encounter. He felt like his chest and shoulders were tying in knots the more he closed the gap, as though the restriction of his muscles could withstand the force of anything the tighter they wound in on themselves.
However, it was... remarkably, exactly what he'd imagined it to look like, down to the star-shape stylization and everything. He may not have considered that it was not the shape that actual stars found themselves embodying -- or perhaps even known that much -- but he wasn't expecting his imagination to have leaped onto the ground like that. It was extremely surreal. Was he absolutely positive he wasn't daydreaming?
His steps slowed to a crawl as he inched closer, his nose mere centimeters from the glowing ornament before he came to a complete stop. Well, it was certainly pretty, that was for sure. It seemed relatively harmless as well: it didn't seem like it even hit the ground with very much force. It just kind of... rested there.
Taking the star's initiative, Revelin unwound his corded muscles, relaxing into the cool grass like a bandage to a sprain. He coiled his body loosely around the star, watching it for a short interim as though he were expecting it to jump back into the sky at any moment and take off again. It was, at the very least, a very distracting way to keep his mind off of things he'd rather not allow stray too far. It was peculiar, how such a small, alien artifact could be so calming when placed in the right context.
